Lawyer Referral & Information Service
Helping You Connect with New Clients
Every year the LRIS receives more than 13,000 calls requesting a referral to an attorney. The LRIS staff screens these calls and makes the appropriate referral – based upon area of law, geographic location and language preferences.
However, in order to continue to do this, the LRIS staff needs your assistance. The Dayton Bar Association encourages lawyers to join the LRIS as a panel member.
Panel members are needed in all areas of law, especially in the areas of Consumer Affairs, Employer/Employee Relations, Elder Law, Veterans Affairs, Family Law and Landlord/Tenant Issues.
The LRIS and its panel members provide a bridge between the public and the legal community. For more information on how to become a panel member, contact the Dayton Bar Association Lawyer Referral & Information Service by email or call 937.222.7902.
Panel Membership Requirements
LRIS panelists must be active members of the Bar of Ohio, Dayton Bar Association and maintain a full-time office, separate and distinct from home or any other business.
In the event that an ethical complaint reaches the probable cause stage by the Dayton Bar Association, the Office of Disciplinary Counsel of the Supreme Court of Ohio, or any other comparable body, the panelist’s name will be removed from the referral list until the Committee on Professional Ethics (a Certified Grievance Committee) of the Dayton Bar Association or the Office of Disciplinary Counsel of the Supreme Court of Ohio states that the complaint has been satisfactorily resolved.
Panelists must carry professional liability insurance in the amount of $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 in the aggregate. Higher insurance may be required depending on category chosen. If the coverage is terminated, panelist will notify the Association immediately, at which time the panelist’s name will be withdrawn from the panel.
As prescribed by the Supreme Court of Ohio in DR 2-103(C)(2), the DBA Lawyer Referral & Information Service does require a percentage-fee remittance.
On any referral received, which generates a fee in excess of $200.00, 15% of the fee over $200.00 is to be returned to the LRIS within 15 days of receiving the fee.
The proceeds from the percentage-fee program are used to fund the service and increase its promotions, as well as to fund public service activities.
