To become a Notary Public, you must complete the registration process at the DBA office and pass an exam. You must appear in person between 9:00am and 1:00pm, Monday through Friday to begin the registration process.
On your initial visit to the DBA office, you will complete an application and register for the Notary Test, which is held on the 4th Friday of each month. The test is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions and a sample auto title. You will receive a guidebook from which to study for the test. A fee of $60 is due (MasterCard, Visa, cash in the exact amount and checks made payable to the Dayton Bar Association are accepted) at this time and will cover your application processing and testing.
Once you pass the exam, you will be commissioned as a Notary Public for 5 years and you will receive a journal to record your service as a Notary Public. (Additional journals cost $5.35 each.)
- If you fail the test and want to re-take it, there is a $20 fee and you must skip one month before sitting for the test again.
- If you fail the second test, there is a $20 fee and you must skip one month before sitting for the test again.
- If you fail the third test, there is a $20 fee and you must skip two months before sitting for the test again.
- If you fail the fourth test, there is a $20 fee and a one year waiting period before you can sit for the test again.
