Dayton Bar Association Continuing Legal Education

Everything Email for the Legal Professional (Video Replay)

Presenter: Dr. Terri Mester (Case Western Reserve University)

Who should attend: Attorneys and legal support staff who want to improve their legal writing and emailing skills

Email is fast becoming the major way legal professionals communicate with each other. Yet, despite its vast advantages, email does have disadvantages. Legal professionals feel like they are drowning in the medium. They seem caught in a nonstop wheel of information overwhelm. They’re not sure of proper email etiquette or formatting. Nor are they sure how clear and effective email style differs from other forms of correspondence. Email is a stone-cold medium, and it is imperative to set the proper tone to avoid being misunderstood.

Topics include:

  • How to manage your email
  • Email etiquette, tone, structure and design
  • Effective email style, like strengthening the subject, substituting plain language for legalese, using active voice, unearthing verbs from nouns and pruning sentences of verbiage
  • How to polish your email grammar
